Article history: Received 20 January 2014 Received in revised form 21 April 2014 Accepted 19 May 2014 Available online 19 June 2014 The Toyota Prius was first introduced in 1997 and since then over 150 hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have been brought to the automobile market around the world. This was spurred by a major interest in the future of vehicles using ‘alternative fuel’ for addressing environmental and fuel dependency concerns. Based upon previous work, which identified an input–output model that could successfully explain the progress of HEV technologies, this study evaluates and compares the technological advancement observed in different HEV market segments over the past 15 years. The results indicate that the introduction of a wide range of midsize HEVs is posing a threat to the two-seaters and compact HEV segments while an SUV segment shows a fast adoption with a significant performance improvement. The rates of change for each segment are also provided to give insights into the estimation of the future performance levels for new product development target setting purposes. © 2014 Elsevier Inc. A New Framework for Advancement of Power Management Strategies in Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Power management strategies play a key role in the design process of hybrid electric vehicles. Electric Assist Control Strategy (EACS) is one of the popular power management strategies for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The present investigation proposes a new framework to advance the EACS. Dynamic Programming method is applied to an HEV model in several drive cycles, and as a result, some op...

Large Lithium Polymer Battery Modeling for the Simulation of Hybrid Electric Vehicles Using the Equivalent Circuit Method

In the present study, a model of a large Lithium Polymer (Li-Po) battery for use in the simulation of Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) is developed. To attain this goal, an Equivalent Circuit (EC) consisting of a series resistor and two RC parallel networks is considered. The accuracy and the response time of the model for use in an HEV simulator are studied. The battery parameters identifica...

Technology Roadmap Prioritization in Acquisition Layer with Ranking Options of Market Layer: A Case Study

Roadmap is a strategic plan that describes the steps an organization needs to take to achieve stated outcomes and goals in different layers and these layers are closely related to each other. Lower layer are more important in planning processes. Acquisition layer is one of the most crucial layers in road mapping process. Today there are some international organizations that do policy making and...

A Genetic-Fuzzy Control Strategy for Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicle

Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) are driven by two energy convertors, i.e., an Internal Combustion (IC) engine and an electric machine. To make powertrain of HEV as efficient as possible, proper management of the energy elements is essential. This task is completed by HEV controller, which splits power between the IC engine and Electric Motor (EM). In this paper, a Genetic-Fuzzy control strategy...
